Some trips are holidays. Others shift something in you.
Our founder, Jonas, recently travelled across Tanzania with his husband’s family–five national parks, two lakes, and a very special private plane. There were long, dusty drives across the savannah, cultural visits with the Hadzabe tribe, and epic moments that redefined “quality time.” While this was a personal journey, it sparked a bigger conversation among our team: is Tanzania the ultimate destination for families seeking something extraordinary?
We think it might be.
From the drama of the Great Migration to the serene beauty of Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania has the landscapes, wildlife, and cultural depth to enthral everyone from small children to teens, parents to grandparents. Add world-class lodges, private guides, and easy fly-in access between parks, and suddenly a multi-generational trip doesn’t just become possible–it becomes unforgettable.

A natural playground for all ages
Tanzania’s northern safari circuit–home to Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti–is ideal for families. Each region offers a new ecosystem, distinct wildlife, and different types of adventure, all within relatively close reach of each other. This variation helps avoid travel fatigue and keeps younger travellers constantly engaged.
In a single week, you can:
- Canoe past giraffes in Arusha National Park
- Watch elephants walk past your tent in Tarangire
- Spot tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara
- Create traditional Jewellery with local tribes
- Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a Big Five bonanza
- Witness the Great Migration in the Serengeti (timing dependent)
It’s nature, yes. But it’s also theatre. And kids (and adults) are mesmerised.
Wildlife that delivers
Tanzania isn’t a place where you spend days waiting for sightings. From your first game drive, you’re likely to see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, elephants, and lions–and with luck, leopards, cheetahs, and even rhinos. This is a huge win when travelling with younger guests who might not enjoy long stints of animal tracking.
Private guides play a crucial role here. They adapt the day to suit energy levels and interests, and many are excellent at engaging children, teaching them how to spot tracks, identify birds, and understand animal behaviours. We work closely with guides who not only know the land inside out, but know how to create magic for every age group.

Elevated comfort for the discerning traveller
Tanzania has long been home to some of Africa’s finest safari lodges, and for families seeking a high-touch experience, the standard keeps rising. Touches like dedicated private guides for your family throughout, custom-designed game drives for different ages, and the ease of private dining under the stars without leaving your suite. Some properties offer personal butlers, in-room spa treatments, or hands-on bushcraft lessons for kids, so every generation feels genuinely looked after.
For discerning travellers, we look for lodges that blend privacy, flexibility and a strong sense of place. Many offer:
- Interconnecting tents or family suites
- Private plunge pools
- Dedicated kids’ menus
- Childminding services
- Educational bush activities designed for younger travellers
Some of our favourite stays for families include:
- &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge – a fairytale setting with dramatic views and family suites
- Singita Serengeti House – exclusive-use villa with private guide, chef and full staff
- Forest Chem Chem Camp – intimate, authentic bush camp with a strong conservation ethos, offering immersive family-friendly safari experiences
- Singita Sasakwa Lodge – grand and elegant, offering exceptional service and panoramic views; ideal for families wanting a refined, all-ages experience
- &Beyond Grumeti River Lodge – contemporary and stylish, with family-friendly features and prime wildlife viewing in a quieter corner of the Serengeti
Every RASK itinerary is tailor-made, and we handpick properties based on your group’s unique needs, preferences, and pace.

Cultural encounters
One of the most powerful aspects of a Tanzanian family safari is the opportunity to engage with East Africa’s rich cultural landscape. During his trip, Jonas visited the Hadzabe people near Lake Eyasiz-one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa.
We prioritise authentic cultural encounters that offer genuine community involvement and meaningful connections. For families, these experiences provide:
- A broader understanding of life beyond the safari bubble
- Perspective-shifting conversations
- Unique learning moments for children, especially around language, tradition, and resilience
Combined with visits to local schools, markets or community projects, these interactions often become the most talked-about part of the trip.
Travel & when to visit
Tanzania is big. The classic northern circuit can involve a lot of driving–something Jonas and his family embraced, clocking up miles across the savannah before flying back to Kilimanjaro on a private plane. It worked beautifully for them, but it’s not the only option.
For families with limited time or restless kids, fly-in safaris can significantly cut down travel time. Light aircraft flights connect most of the major parks, and chartering a private plane can make the journey even smoother. Our team can help you decide when to drive, when to fly, and how to break up the journey in a way that suits your family’s rhythm.
Tanzania is a year-round destination, but timing can impact both logistics and what you see:
- June to October: Peak dry season, excellent wildlife viewing, but lodges book up early (Jonas and his family chose the second half of July for their trip)
- November: Short rains, fewer crowds, still great game viewing
- December to March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti, with lots of predator action
- April to May: Long rains, many lodges close
If you’re tied to school holidays, we’ll help you secure the best spots early and build in special moments–from sundowners on the savannah to lantern-lit dinners under the stars.

Family time is precious, and it doesn’t get more enriching, more inspiring, or more memorable than this.
Tanzania delivers big adventure with real meaning–the kind of trip that brings everyone closer, offers perspective, and leaves you planning the next one before you’ve even left. Whether you’re travelling with little ones or teens, celebrating something special, or just want to spend time together in a way that feels intentional, this is a journey that delivers on every level.
We’d love to help you plan it.
