Earlier this year, our founder, Jonas, headed to the island with his family during the May half-term holidays, splitting his stay between two very different properties: Kimpton Aysla Mallorca in Santa Ponsa and Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor.

One offered an easy-going, wellness-focused base just outside Palma. The other occupied one of the most iconic hotel locations anywhere in the Mediterranean.

Together, they provided a timely reminder of why Mallorca remains one of the easiest destinations in Europe…

First Stop: Kimpton Aysla Mallorca

A Relaxed Start to the Trip

The trip began in Santa Ponsa, on Mallorca’s southwest coast.

Whilst many visitors head straight for Palma or the island’s more famous beach resorts, Santa Ponsa occupies a slightly different niche. Surrounded by golf courses, pine forests, tennis facilities, and residential communities, it offers a calmer side of Mallorca whilst remaining within easy reach of the capital.

That’s part of what makes Kimpton Aysla such an appealing option.

Located just fifteen minutes from Palma Airport, it’s one of those hotels that feels genuinely relaxing almost immediately after arrival. The journey is short, the setting is peaceful, and before long you’re sitting beside the pool wondering why every family holiday can’t begin this smoothly.

The hotel forms part of the wider Santa Ponsa Country Club estate and has been thoughtfully designed around wellness, sport, and outdoor living. Architecture by Mallorcan architect Guillermo Reynés takes inspiration from traditional island courtyards, whilst interiors incorporate local artwork, ceramics, and natural materials that help ground the property in its surroundings.

What Stood Out

The atmosphere is refreshingly informal. Kimpton has never tried to compete with the grand European hotel brands. There is a relaxed confidence to the property that immediately puts guests at ease.

The gardens are a major part of that. Mature landscaping, Mediterranean planting, and a series of quiet corners create a sense of seclusion that belies the hotel’s convenient location. Equally impressive are the wellness facilities. The indoor pool, expansive gym, and spa are substantial enough to become a genuine part of the stay rather than an occasional diversion.

The rooms continue the same philosophy. Neutral tones, natural materials, and generous outdoor terraces create spaces that feel residential rather than overtly hotel-like. It’s easy to settle in.

Breakfast deserves a mention too. Generous without feeling overwhelming, it provided the perfect start to days that often alternated between pool time, exploring the island, and simply enjoying the slower pace that Mallorca does so well.

One of the Mediterranean’s Great Hotel Addresses

When Four Seasons announced it was taking over Formentor, plenty of people paid attention.

This wasn’t simply another luxury hotel opening. Formentor has been part of Mallorca’s story for almost a century.

The original hotel opened in 1929 and quickly became a retreat for writers, artists, politicians and Hollywood stars drawn to the extraordinary setting at the northern tip of the island. Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Charles Chaplin all spent time here, although the landscape itself remains the real attraction.

The drive still winds through pine forests before revealing one of the most beautiful bays in the Mediterranean. The mountains rise behind the hotel, the sea stretches endlessly ahead, and suddenly the journey north makes complete sense.

How Four Seasons Has Reninvented It

The challenge for Four Seasons was never creating a great hotel. It was preserving everything people already loved about Formentor whilst bringing it into a new era.

Thankfully, they seem to have understood the assignment. The resort feels elegant but never intimidating, polished without becoming overly formal. Rooms, restaurants and public spaces have all been thoughtfully updated, yet the focus remains firmly on the setting.

And what a setting it is. Every room faces the sea, whilst gardens and terraces spill gently towards the beach below (many with tucked-away private pools).

The Beach, The Bay & The Water

If there is one thing that defines Formentor, it is the bay.

The beach remains public, something that feels increasingly rare at this level of luxury hospitality and which helps maintain a genuine connection to the destination. Locals, day visitors and hotel guests all share the same stretch of coastline, creating an atmosphere that feels distinctly Mediterranean rather than overly curated.

One afternoon, Jonas rented a pedal boat with his children and headed out into the bay. It ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. No private yacht charter, no elaborate excursion, just a few hours on the water, an ice cream stop along the way, and the sort of simple family fun that often becomes the most memorable part of a holiday.

The water itself was extraordinary. Clear, calm and intensely blue, it prompted repeated comparisons to the Maldives throughout the stay – not something said lightly.

Of course, there is plenty more to do. Boat trips reveal hidden coves inaccessible by road, whilst the surrounding Tramuntana mountains offer some of the finest walking in Spain.

Much of the stay was spent doing the sort of things family holidays should probably involve more of: reading by the pool, chatting over long breakfasts (both hotels were excellent, but Four Seasons was pretty special with a wonderful buffet and à la carte options), playing UNO in the shade and occasionally wandering down to the beach.

Four Seasons Mallorca is particularly well suited to families and multi-generational groups looking to spend meaningful time together.

Travellers seeking nightlife and late evenings will probably be happier elsewhere. This corner of Mallorca is about nature, scenery, long lunches, beach days and the sort of relaxed pace that becomes increasingly appealing with age. For everyone else, it’s rather wonderful.
